Step 2 · The Build
Stock rebuild or upgraded build.
Every rebuild gets the full teardown, cleaning, inspection, and the factory updates. The upgraded build goes further and corrects the 62TE's known weak points so the same failure doesn't come back.
Stock Rebuild — OE Spec
The right choice for a lightly-used van or a budget-focused repair. Everything worn or updated gets replaced with OE-quality parts:

Straight Answer

Every HD build item fixes something real, but they're not equally important. Whether you're phasing the upgrade in or just want to understand why the quote looks the way it does, this is the priority order — from "don't skip this" to what actually separates fixed from bulletproof.
Non-Negotiable
These two are the actual root cause of most 62TE deaths — skip them and a "rebuilt" 62TE fails again within a year.
- Updated low-clutch drum (05078815AD) — the original compounder drum cracks and its rotating sealing rings wear, bleeding pressure straight to the low/reverse clutch. This is the #1 reason 62TEs actually fail.
- Sonnax pump & stator-support bushing correction — the OE bushings wear oversized fast, dropping line pressure across the whole unit. Everything downstream is fighting a losing battle if the pump can't hold pressure first.
Do It While It's Open
The highest-leverage upgrades — grouped together because raising line pressure without them creates new problems instead of solving old ones.
- TransGo 62TE-HP reprogramming kit — the single highest-leverage part on this list. The 26% pressure increase is what actually stops clutch glazing and slippage under load, the #2 failure mode after the drum.
- Raybestos HT frictions — needed because you're raising line pressure. Stock-spec frictions glaze faster once they're clamping harder and running hotter.
- Sonnax oversized valves — the pressure-regulator and TCC valve bores wear oval over time and bleed pressure regardless of what shift kit is installed. Skip this on a higher-mileage unit and the HP kit's gains erode within a year.
- New solenoid pack — cheap insurance while the pan's already off. Solenoid failure is a common second-life problem and nobody wants to reopen a finished unit for it.
Long-Term Insurance
This is what separates "fixed" from "bulletproof" under real-world abuse — towing, stop-and-go, high mileage.
- EMCC1-spec torque converter — stock converters are prone to TCC shudder and cold-start drain-back, which stresses clutches and recirculates debris into the pump on every startup.
- Auxiliary stacked-plate cooler — heat is the actual long-term killer of any automatic, and factory cooling is marginal on anything towing or running stop-and-go.
- wiTECH Quick Learn after reassembly — resets adaptive shift values so the TCM isn't compensating for old, worn characteristics against the new pressure and friction package. Skip it and the new frictions burn in faster under harsh, uncalibrated shifts.
